Job Summary

This role will focus on researching, maintaining, developing, and executing, a variety of sustainability programs across the organization, including annual reporting. This role will report to the VP Office of Ethics & Compliance and will work closely with senior leaders at corporate and operating units, as well as department heads, customers and other business partners to gather information and advance McCarthy’s corporate sustainability practices and employee engagement on sustainability.

The position will broadly support all sustainability programs, though will focus on three primary categories of work:

  • Responsible for the development of the company’s sustainability strategy throughout all operations, overseeing sustainability trends research, data, reporting, and organizational oversight.
  • Participate in the growth and maintenance of various operational sustainability programs focused on health and safety and fleet and service-mix environmental initiatives.
  • Liaising with sustainability rating agencies and staying abreast of sustainability reporting framework developments and best practices.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads day-to-day projects and activities supporting sustainability reporting and participates in employee owner outreach programs. Manages, influences, provides guidance and builds support for cross-regional sustainability efforts
  • Regional office and project engagement to identify and incorporate sustainable practices into day-to-day operations. (Design, LEED, Living Building Challenge)
  • Plans, develops and manages the company’s sustainability reports and other disclosures, outlining sustainability-related efforts and results in alignment with broader public disclosure practices
  • Builds working relationships with key partners across the firm and businesses including the functional support areas such as environmental, health and safety (EHS), operations, supply chain management, human resources, legal, etc.
  • Leverages and/or develops website and other digital platforms to capture and share ESG related results and updates throughout the organization.
  • Develops and tracks metrics for sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement.
  • Tracks emerging and developing sustainability practices at peer firms and in the marketplace ensuring company activities are relevant and aligned with trends in the external environment.
  • Gathers, analyzes and interprets sustainability-related data and where possible benchmarks against peers.
  • Understands, identifies and monitors sustainability issues in the industry that could affect our business and keeps abreast of industry standards, best practices and regulatory trends.
  • Understands and incorporates the ESG eco-system of reporting frameworks and communication tools into reports, operating procedures and communication standards.
  • Reviews and verifies third-party ESG data provider reports.
  • Performs other related activities and provides support as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant environmental/natural science/Construction Management/Engineering or similar subject
  • Relevant experience of a similar or related role in construction
  • Strong technical understanding of sustainability, climate change and environmental management and demonstrable experience of providing advisory and practical support in embedding sustainability or environmental management within organizations and projects
  • Knowledge and experience of supporting projects in addressing sustainability challenges and opportunities including any of the following: resource efficiency, environmental and social value creation, life cycle assessment and/or sustainable procurement
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to think strategically about integrated and holistic solutions
  • A proven track record of successful project or task management and delivery on environmental and/or sustainability projects and programs
  • Excellent report writing skills and substantial experience of report writing, presentations and workshop delivery
  • Experience of advising on and developing sustainable approaches and methodologies for proposals
  • Excellent communication and team skills
  • The ability to package information for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • A focus and desire to work safely.
